Why clear phone cases turn yellow, and what you can do about it
Clear cases change tone over time. It is the most common question we get about them, so here is the straight answer: it comes down to the material, the sun, and often enough, surface buildup that cleans straight off.
What is actually happening
Almost every clear case uses TPU somewhere. It is the soft, flexible material that absorbs a drop, grips in your hand and lets a case flex onto your phone instead of clipping around it. Nothing else does that job as well, which is why it is in nearly every clear case you will pick up.
Over time, UV light and heat slowly change soft clear TPU, and that change shows as a warm tint. It is gradual, it is a property of the material rather than a fault, and South African sun moves it along faster than most.
ORRO's clear cases use a UV-treated TPU, which is there to hold the clarity for longer.
Hard polycarbonate behaves differently. It is rigid rather than flexible, and it resists tinting far better, which is why a hybrid case puts a polycarbonate panel across the back and keeps the TPU in the frame where the flex is needed.
Is it the case, or is it dirt?
This is the part most people never hear. A clear case picks up oils from your hands, sunscreen, hand cream, dust that settles into the texture, and dye from dark denim and bags. All of that builds up on the surface, and all of it looks like yellowing.
The difference is simple. Contamination builds up in weeks and comes off. A tint from UV comes on gradually over months and stays.
So if your case has gone dull after a few weeks, clean it first. There is a good chance it comes back.
How to clean a clear case
Take the case off the phone. Wash it in warm water with a drop of dish soap, and work the soap over the whole case with your fingers or a soft cloth. For the textured parts and around the buttons, a soft toothbrush lifts what a cloth cannot reach. Rinse it properly, then dry it fully before it goes back on your phone.
Skip anything harsh. Alcohol, acetone, bleach and abrasive creams can haze the surface or make the material brittle, and a hazy case is harder to live with than a slightly warm one.
What speeds it up
Sun and heat, mostly. A phone mounted on a dashboard gets both at once and gets them all day. So does a phone left on a windowsill or on a table outside. A hot car does it without any direct sun at all.
After that it is what the case touches. Sunscreen and hand cream are the two worst, and new dark denim transfers dye into a clear case surprisingly quickly.
You cannot avoid all of it, and you should not try to. It is a phone case. But if yours lives on a dash mount, it is worth knowing that is the hardest life a clear case can have.
People often ask how long it takes. There is no honest single answer, because the difference between a case that lives in a pocket and one that lives on a dashboard is enormous. Exposure decides it, not time.
Why flexible TPU is still worth choosing
Because it gives you something no hard material can. TPU flexes on impact, so it takes the energy out of a drop instead of passing it straight through to the phone, and that is why it sits in the frame and corners of almost every case that protects well. In a fully flexible case, the whole thing works that way.
It is also the slimmest thing you can put on a phone. It follows the shape of the handset rather than adding to it, it sits soft in your hand, and it barely changes what goes into your pocket. And it shows your phone the way you chose it, colour and finish and all, which is the whole reason for a clear case in the first place.
That is a real benefit, and the tint is the cost of it. It is a change in look, not in how the case does its job — the flex, the grip and the protection stay exactly as they were. If that trade suits you, it is the right case.
If you would rather keep the clear look for as long as possible, a hard back is the one to look at. ORRO's clear range includes hard-backed options, and some pair a clear hard back with a black frame, so the frame has nothing to show in the first place.
Keep it out of the sun, give it a wash now and then, and it will stay looking the way you bought it for a good while longer.
